Formed in September 2013, Black Thorn are a four-piece band, young and energetic with a catchy new-wave folk sound.
Most of Black Thorn’s material is original and their influences are diverse (Seth Lakeman, Calvin Harris, Fat Freddy’s Drop and even Bullet For My Valentine!)
They use mandolin, accordion, acoustic guitars, bass, trumpet, percussion, beatboxing and vocal harmonies. And wah pedals, of course.
Their first EP was released in July 2014 and tracks from it have been played regularly on BBC Introducing with rave reviews from DJ Christian Carlisle.
Their debut album ‘Butter Side Up’ was released in August 12016 and every track on it has been played by the BBC.
Their music has been featured in BBC Sheffield’s Top 50 Tracks of 2014, 2015, 2016 (they reached no. 5!) and 2017. They have been played on the Mark Forrest Show, which goes out to all 39 BBC stations in the UK.
They have been featured on BBC 6Music – Tom Robinson’s Mixtape and also his Top 25 tracks ‘Fresh On The Net’. They were broadcast playing a live session on BBC Introducing for Tramlines Festival, Sheffield, in 2016.
In 2017 they played the BBC Introducing Stage at Latitude Festival, which was obviously the highlight of their festival career!
And currently, they are in the studio recording their second album.
